My Homelessness Journey … July–September 2026

A first-person record of shelter life, finding work, gaining housing, and the people I met along the way in Chico, California.

I began sharing my experiences publicly in July 2026, while I was staying at the Torres Shelter. I wasn’t looking for sympathy. I wanted people to understand what it feels like to enter the homelessness system, what it takes to navigate it, and how people can become invisible once they’re part of it.

Some of these chapters are lightly edited Facebook posts written as events happened. Others are clearly marked later reflections, written after I found housing. The dates below follow the events and original posts, not necessarily the dates the articles were added to this site.

Part I … Inside the shelter

  1. July 21 … Why I’m Making My Homelessness Public … Why I decided to share my experiences instead of staying quiet.
  2. July 21 … My First Night at the Shelter … Lockdown, interrupted sleep, and the reality of dormitory life.
  3. July 22 … Day 2: Beggars Can’t Be Choosers … Being labeled, accepted, and treated with dignity.
  4. July 22 … Now for the Reality of Things … Why I still counted myself lucky.
  5. July 23 … I Am Lucky … But What About Everyone Else? … What I saw happening to people with fewer options.
  6. July 30 … Being Homeless Is Being in a Constant State of Panic … The everyday stress of having no secure place to live.

Part II … A chance to regroup

  1. July 31 … From Torres to Temporary Housing … A welcome improvement, though not yet a home.
  2. August 13 … If You Don’t Understand … Hurry up and wait … and time you never get back.
  3. August 13 … At the Facility … My observations, questions, and frustrations.
  4. August 19 … My Homelessness Is Ending … Finding a room through my own community connections.

Part III … Building back a life

  1. August 24 … Six Miles a Day … Finding Freedom on Two Wheels … Independence and commuting without a car.
  2. August 28 … I Have Everything I Need … Except a J.O.B. … Part-time employment and navigating benefits rules.
  3. August 30 … The Little Things That Make a Home … Bifocals, plans, a desk, and a chair.
  4. September 1 … The First Night I Finally Slept … Why a lockable room meant more than a bed.
  5. September 10 … And Just to Be Clear … The initial shock of changing food assistance.
  6. September 11 … I Am Ecstatic … The next update in the benefits story.

Part IV … The neighbors I didn’t forget

  1. September 27 … 84 Years Old and Still Without a Safe Place to Sleep … A neighbor’s need for safety, privacy, and independence.

Continuing the story … October 2026

The first 17 chapters document what happened while I was navigating homelessness and finding my way into housing. The story continues as I help other neighbors, work with local organizations, and try to find common ground across Chico.

About these accounts

These are personal accounts, not official descriptions of shelter policies or social-service eligibility. When I describe rules, conditions, or what people told me, I am sharing my understanding at the time. I may have been wrong about some details, and policies can change. Where later context is added, I try to label it rather than silently rewrite history.

The original photos reproduced in some chapters came from my Facebook archive. No photos of other shelter residents are included.
